A common question is "How long will it take to pass my driving test?" or "How many driving lessons are required to pass a driving test?". They are relevant questions of course, the cost of driving lessons is not inconsiderable and I know I was very keen to get on the road when I was learning to drive.

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to these questions, it depends on the individual pupil. I am sure you are aware that people's co-ordination, learning speed and memory vary considerably and these are relevant to learning to drive. I can give you some guidance on the average number of hours it takes to learn to drive but before I do that let me give you some tips on helping yourself to speed up the process.

A direct quote from the DSA:-

"Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice. Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test."

From the AA, this is how many hours on average a pupil will take, assuming no previous experience and no private practice.

60 47-68 69-87 88-108 109-129 130+

The main conclusions from this table are that that on average it will take less time to learn to drive when you are young and there is a wide variation in the number of hours of driving lessons a pupil will take to pass their test.

It is also a statistical fact that those who pass their test very quickly are more likely to have an accident shortly after passing their test than others and that those who pass on their second attempt at the driving test are less likely to have an accident than those who pass first time.
