Should I practice in my own car with a friend or relative?
Yes - practice makes perfect.
Please remember to conform to all legal requirements (see Motoring section of www.direct.gov.uk for details).
It is probably a good idea to have a few lessons with me first, new learners tend to be hard on cars and the dual controls
tend to be needed at an early stage.
However after that the more practice you can get the better.
Don't be put off by
different cars, they all work in basically the same way.
It is a good idea to get an extra mirror for
the accompanying driver to use, these can be
bought cheaply from any motor accessory shop.
You need to get on well with the person who is
accompanying you even under pressure. Note that
it is illegal for anyone who is not an Approved
Driving Instructor to accept any kind of payment for accompanying learners.
Can I just borrow your car to sit my driving test?
No. Dave has a duty of care to examiners and his insurance company not let anyone sit a test without being ready.
A minimum of a two hour lesson is required to assess whether you are ready or not.
Can you teach me in my own car?
Under some circumstances yes.
If you are a new learner then a few lessons in my car are required so that I can be confident that I need
don't need to use the dual controls.
After that, or if you are a qualified driver, then I can teach you in your own car.
Can I sit the test in my own car?
Yes, there is nothing legally preventing you from using your own car for the test.
However, you do need to check your insurance, most standard policies do not cover tests.
Can I learn in an automatic car?
Dave is quite happy to teach in an automatic but he doesn't have access to one.
If you have an automatic and are not a complete beginner (or have dual controls) then Dave can teach you.
Note that if you sit your test in an automatic, your license will restrict you to driving automatics only and you will need another test to upgarde to include a manual car.
